Who Turned the Lights Out?

Imagine being deaf—and then facing darkness when night falls. At Ephphatha Deaf School in Burundi, students board on campus, so the absence of reliable power affects their night time activities in the dorms, their ability to study, safety as they move around the campus and even enjoying meal times.

Burundi Hope Project has seen the need for a reliable power supply as we visited the campus in June. A back up solar supply has outlived its usefulness and the promise of public utilities is 3 years late! We have heard the concerns and we are reaching out to our ministry partners to help us “turn the lights back on.” A consistent power supply will also open doors for sustainability projects that are not functioning. Here are the possibilities.

• The school has a small fish pond similar to the one at Kanura. It requires a functioning pump.

• A small grain milling operation can also be income producing for the school.

• New vocational skills programs such as welding, carpentry and technology skills can be developed.
