Love God. Love People. Share the Gospel. Bring Hope.

Meeting the educational, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of Burundi through local church partnerships.

Who We Are

Burundi Hope has been working in partnership with national believers from the Community of Emmanuel Churches to further the Gospel through Biblically-based programs, education, and training since 2014. By providing access to God’s word, skill-building programs, and sustainable tools, we are empowering and enabling the Burundian nationals to take ownership and provide for themselves and their families. As a result, they are helping to disciple others to become Christ followers. Through education, we can illuminate their spiritual life!

Barriers in Burundi

UNSTABLE ECONOMY

Burundi is the poorest country in the world with a population of over 12.5 million people with 80% of them being subsistence farmers. The country is underdeveloped in the manufacturing sector and is resource poor. The average daily income of a Burundian is $1.75 per day.

IMPACT OF CIVIL WAR

Burundi is still recovering from the effects of the 1993 - 2005 civil war. 300,000 lives were lost leaving behind many widows and orphans. Government corruption contributes to a weak legal system. Positive changes in the government are slowly being made.

CULTURAL VALUES

Two main tribes, Hutu and Tutsi, clash over ethnic differences and have split the country in many factions, especially social stratification. 14% are Tutsi and are considered to be the wealthier, more prominent tribe. 85% are Hutu and rely heavily on agriculture and are rich in culture and tradition. 1% are Batwa, an indigenous people group living in the mountain lakes region.

EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES

Although the country provides free primary education there is a shortage of qualified teachers and resources needed to provide education and vocational skills training due to extreme poverty. Families find it difficult to provide for further education of their children at the secondary and university level.
